Cumberland is a small town on the eastern edge of Indianapolis, Indiana that is split between Hancock and Marion counties in the state of Indiana. Located on the historic National Road, now US Route 40, the town is well known as the last stopover before Indianapolis when traveling from the east. Cumberland has a rich transportation history not only with the National Road, but also as a stop along the interurban to Indianapolis, The Pennsylvania Railroad once brought travelers and transported farmers crops and livestock to Cumberland. Cumberland's historic downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has maintained much of its original small town charm, while providing the amenities of an urban area. Cumberland is just a 20 minute drive to Indianapolis and has easy access to major interstates and the Indianapolis International Airport. The town is also served by the IndyGo bus system. Cumberland is in the early stages of the reconstruction of East Washington Street and a new streetscape, set to be completed by the end of the 2010 construction season. The Cumberland Pennsy Trail will break ground in 2009. The trail will be along the abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad and link to the Pennsy Trail in Indianapolis and in Greenfield in the future. Once linked, residents of Cumberland will have access to the Indianapolis Cultural Trail and Monon Trail. The Cumberland Pennsy Trail is also a part of the National Road Heritage Trail. Residents of Cumberland are proud of their Historic National Road heritage and are celebrating it through these projects.
